Shortcut Steel Cut Oats w/ Apple
I love having this trick of a recipe under my sleeve for busy, cold mornings. Just the tiniest bit of effort the night before your breakfast pays off big time, as you’ll have cooked steel cut oat porridge waiting for you on the stovetop in the morning.
Shortcut Steel Cut Oats w/ Apple
serves 1-2
1/4 cup steel cup oats
1 cup water or plant milk, plus more for reheating
sea salt
1 apple, grated
toppings of choice like nut butter, yogurt, fruit, hemp hearts, etc.
The night before you plan on eating these oats, combine the oats, water/milk, and a pinch of salt in a small pot. Bring to a boil, turn off the heat, cover, and let the oats sit on the stove until morning. The oats should be fully cooked by morning time.
Add the grated apple and a splash of water/milk, mix to combine, and reheat the oats for 5-10 minutes. Add more liquid, if needed, to achieve your desired consistency. Serve warm, garnished with your favorite toppings.
Intuitive Cooking Takeaways

For a richer flavor, toast the oats first in some coconut oil or butter until golden, then proceed with the recipe.
In place of apple, try pear or squash/pumpkin.
